The Laurel Highlands in Western Pennsylvania has some of the best hiking trails in the entire state. Hiking through the Appalachian terrain, you’ll come across deep rocky canyons, laurel-covered cliffs, and vibrant wildlife everywhere you go. With thousands of sprawling acres of natural beauty, it can be difficult to decide on which route to take. We’ve compiled a list of the best hiking trails in all of the Laurel Highlands for all levels of difficulty.

Meadow Run Trail

The Meadow Run Trail near Ohiopyle Park is an easy hike for those who want to spend a couple hours on a trail with little sweat. It runs in a loop for about 3 miles with some beautiful waterfalls along the way. It’s dog-friendly so you can bring your canine companion along as long as you keep them on a leash. The hike brings you to two spectacular views of the Youghiogheny River and the gorge at Meadow Run.

Davis Run Trail

Davis Run Trail in Keystone Park is a fairly easy hike to trek with just under 2 miles of trail. It runs through a beautiful hardwood and conifer forest with views of the wetlands and Beaver Pond. You can expect to see some wildlife on this trail. Keep an eye out for waterfowl and beavers.

Hemlock Trail

The Hemlock Trail in Rockwood is a little more challenging–a good hike for a moderate level hiker. It is a 1.6-mile loop that is great during the early spring months when the wildflowers are in full bloom. However, Hemlock is a great hike to take at any time of the year and takes your right along a creek. The hike has very peaceful settings to stop and take in the beauty of the park.

Wolf Rocks Trail

Running right along the Laurel Highlands Summit, the Wolf Rocks Trail is a 4-mile scenic loop hike. Although there are some rocky parts, the trail itself is mostly flat. Once you get about 2 miles in, there is a beautiful overlooking view of the surrounding valleys. The whole hike should take about 2 hours to complete. It’s another dog-friendly trail as long as your furry friends are kept on their leashes.

Beam Rocks Trail

If you’re looking for a quick moderate hike, head over to the Beam Rocks Trail in Forbes State Forest. It has a gorgeous overlook view of the Highlands that is worth climbing. The hike itself has lots of rocky terrain with lots of big boulders to climb. It’s a popular hike for those who are bringing their bouldering and mountain climbing gear.
